The best, best thing about living in Chicago is that as soon as the weather shows even the slightest signs of heating up, people really freak out. The lakeshore path is filled with runners and bikers, restaurants bust out their outdoor patio furniture, and everywhere you look, people are drinking beer outside and laughing with their friends. The upside about the weather being absolute crap for much of the year is that people don’t waste a second of a sunny day, and there’s nothing like the energy in the city in the summer. It makes the rest of the year (almost) totally worth it.

I have an incredible salty-sweet treat for you to whip up for your sweetie this Valentine’s Day.

Or you know, your Galentine’s Day/Palentine’s Day/average Tuesday. Basically whenever.

Ironically, my “sweetie” is not that into these. He is anti-sweet and salty. I’m still convinced something happened to his taste buds as a child because this just does not make any sense to me, but whatever. More for me. Basically what I’m saying is that I made these as an early Valentine’s Day gift to myself. Because LOVE YO SELF, amiright?

Peanut Butter Brownies | My Bacon-Wrapped Life

These peanut butter M&M brownies will always have a very special place in my heart, because as far as I’m concerned, they were my first “thing.” They represent the first time I ever-so-slightly modified a recipe to my own tastes, the first time I could offer something new that I could say was kind of mine. I’ve made them countless times since I started making them in high school, and I’ve never been greeted by anything besides rave reviews (and a first-place prize at my office’s Christmas potluck last year).  They’ve been my go-to for as long as I can remember, a constant source of one-bowl indulgence that has brightened many a birthday and celebration.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Bars

How is there not a peanut butter recipe on here yet? As a person who adores peanut butter in any form – covered in chocolate, smushed into a sandwich, baked into something delicious, or just eaten straight out of the jar – this is simply unacceptable.  Since I have started this blog, I haven’t made a single recipe with peanut butter, not a single peanut butter cookie, PB-swirled brownie, or even a proper PB+J (or, my preferred pairing, PB+pickle…don’t knock it ‘til you try it). What have I been doing with my life?!
