Roasted Butternut Squash Hummus

roasted butternut squash hummus // my bacon-wrapped life

Whew. What a week, huh?

I never talk about politics, or anything too heavy really, in this space because I truly don’t think that’s what it’s for. This is supposed to be a happy place, where we can all come together and celebrate the amazingness that is butter and sugar and bread and bacon. I would never want a single person to come to my blog to check out a recipe or learn a new food trick, and find themselves feeling uncomfortable or alienated by anything I write here. But I think we can safely say this week was hard, disappointing, and aggressively eye opening, no matter what side of the aisle we’re on, right?

So while I won’t ever get overly political, I also don’t believe in pretending everything is happy-go-lucky when there are really serious, devastatingly divisive issues facing this country right now and I think everyone is feeling a little wonky this week. I strongly believe that education is the first step towards understanding and discussion, so personally, I’ve been reading every article I can get my hands on and am planning on working through this list to learn everything I can about what happened and what’s next for our country. And I can honestly say that I’ve never looked forward to Thanksgiving more than I am this year. I think we all need a day of eating, drinking, and holding the people we love most really, really tight right about now!

Foodie Favorites – January 13, 2016

foodie favorites - january 13, 2016 // my bacon-wrapped life

Wishing I could be back in vacation mode, eating banana pancakes at my all-time favorite brunch place in L.A.! The January post-holiday struggle is way too real, people.

I can’t believe it’s the first Foodie Favorites of 2016! What are your foodie resolutions this year?! I’m not into the whole “cut out sugar/alcohol/everything wonderful in the world” kind of resolutions, but I love setting cooking goals for myself for the year. Last year, my goal was to expand my cooking horizons by making more Asian and Indian food at home, and I think I did a pretty good job! (Highlights of this resolution include these noodles and this curry. SOO GOOD.) This year my foodie resolutions are twofold: to mix-up our weeknight quick and easy dinner routine (I tend to fall back on the same go-to no-brainer recipes week in and week out, and we could use some variety), and to get more comfortable cooking chicken and fish. I will learn how to roast a chicken like Ina Garten, dammit!! I hope you have some lofty kitchen goals in your life, too. Here are this week’s Foodie Favorites!

Edamame Hummus and Goat Cheese Toast

edamame hummus and goat cheese toast // my bacon-wrapped life

Now if this isn’t the spring-iest thing that has ever sprung from my kitchen, I don’t know what is.

A few weeks ago we started easing into bright, fresh spring-y greens with some, uh, mac n’ cheese. With peas though!! And it was marvelous and cozy and the perfect season-straddling dish. But now? It’s May, yo! It’s full-on spring up in here. And my cravings are aligning with the spring in the air and the promise of long summer days (and eek, bathing suits?!?!) on the horizon.

Foodie Favorites – February 18, 2015

foodie favorites - february 18, 2015 // my bacon-wrapped life

Valentine’s Day breakfast-in-bed by Brad (awww, right?!). Egg sandwiches are his specialty, and I ain’t complainin’ about it.

Helloooo everyone! I hope you’re having a good week and you had a fabulous Valentine’s Day weekend filled with tons of chocolate and wine. We stayed home and cooked (it’s a bit of a tradition) and this year went with a Mediterranean theme – these lamb skewers and tzaziki sauce, and this hummus, along with fresh pita bread. We loved everything, but the tzaziki sauce totally blew us away – SO good! I love having Brad’s help in the kitchen, so it was a perfect Valentine’s Day. Now that we’re back to boring, freezing, dreary old February, let’s look at some pictures of food to cheer us up. Here are this week’s Foodie Favorites!
