What’s the only thing better than candy on Halloween?

That would be candy inside of blondies on Halloween, of course!

I love making fun, festive treats for basically any holiday, and Halloween is no exception. While it’s always the best excuse to eat copious amounts of candy straight-up, I always have fun finding new ways to fancy up the Halloween treats situation around here. And to me, the highest calling of your excess-Halloween-candy stash is baking it into something rich, buttery, and truly more than the sum of its cookie + candy parts.

Hey everyone! Are you all pumped for Halloween? I know I am – tomorrow night the kiddos in our apartment building are coming trick-or-treating, and then we have a very fun Halloween night planned with friends! Obviously we’ll be re-purposing our Oktoberfest gear as Halloween costumes…I mean, why not, right? Here are this week’s Foodie Favorites!

This squash toast with ricotta is AMAZING (I’ve had the original before) and I absolutely cannot wait to re-create at home. This just might be dinner this weekend…

Today is Halloween part deux, coming at you in the form of a slice of ooey-gooey spiced pumpkin cake and a big ol’ dollop of bourbon vanilla bean whipped cream.

I mean, is there any better way to do it?

This pumpkin cake also has the double distinction of being Brad’s sister Tara’s favorite birthday cake. Her birthday’s coming up this week, so not only are we celebrating Halloween, but also HAPPY BIRTHDAY TARA! I wish gooey pumpkin cake tasted as good with the eyes as it does with the mouf.

Homemade Pretzel Candies

This is exactly the thing I would make for trick-or-treaters if I lived in the good old days when kids were allowed to eat homemade candy and other unpackaged goodies, back when you didn’t have to throw away all the pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies that kindly old ladies baked thinking they were doing something nice. There must have been a time like that, right? Before anthrax and serial killers?

Never thought I would talk about anthrax OR serial killers on my food blog, but hey, there’s a first time for everything.
